A black councillor was convicted of racism yesterday for calling an Asian colleague a “coconut” and this sums up how the modern usage of the term racism has been distorted and diluted by the government arguably removing any real potential to tackle it. Is this the end of racism as we know it by its original definition?

Commons Speaker John Bercow caused controversy yesterday after refusing to appoint a candidate chosen by the Dean of Westminster Abbey for the role of ­Chaplain to the House of Commons, and choosing instead to appoint Rev Rose Hudson-Wilkin, a black woman from East London and now the first black vicar of Westminster.

Perturbed Hindus have asked for the immediate withdrawal of skateboards and pet/dog clothing carrying images of Hindu deities sold by a Redwood City (California, USA) based firm Zazzle, calling it inappropriate.

PostHeaderIcon Spy cameras in Birmingham linked to Britain’s terrorist actions in the Middle East

On June 4 a Guardian report uncovered a scandal that surveillance cameras initially promoted to local communities as anti-social deterrents are actually part of a government anti-terrorist initiative targeting Muslim communities in Washwood Heath and Sparkbrook.  However, not discussed is the fact that the increasing encroachments on the civil liberties of Britain’s Muslim communities is linked to Britain’s terrorist actions in the Middle East.

Who really pulls the strings at the United Nations?

There were no surprises when the UN led by America and its allies voted for tougher sanctions against Iran yesterday despite the fact that a deal was reached on May 17, between Iran,  Turkey and Brazil on a nuclear fuel swap. America and its allies are hell bent on either military action against Iran or regime change through sanctions.

The government is to introduce English tests to all immigrants who come into Britain in Autumn which Prime Minister David Cameron referred to as helping newcomers integrate into British society; however the racist intentions of this policy is revealed by the fact that only immigrants outside of Europe will be tested.

There was anger in India today as the verdict was given in the Bhopal disaster trial over 25 years after a gas leak killed up to to 10,000 people and 15,000 over the next fifteen years due to the effects. While seven Indian nationals received only two years for negligence the corporations involved and Union Carbide’s then-chief executive, Warren Anderson remains at large from criminal prosecution. If anything, the entire court case was a farce for the victims and the people of India.

A study by The Law Society last month found that black and ethnic minority firms were being treated differently to white firms by insurance companies and charged higher rates which leads to this uncomfortable question, was this a deliberate tactic by insurance companies to drive black and minority ethnic law firms out of business?

Early Monday morning, 31 May, Israeli military forces stormed an unarmed civilian flotilla delivering humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza killing at least 10 people and leaving many injured, breaking international law yet again without an appropriate response by the world’s major powers. It begs the question, why have international law at all?
